My name is Grant Mukai and I am the Senior Digital Communications Manager at Project HOPE in Maryland, United States of America.

At Project HOPE, I was responsible for leading the transition of our website to a WordPress platform and now manage our online content strategy in order to increase our brand awareness and organic search.

  • As someone who was challenged with increasing our brand awareness and organic search results, I used Google Analytics, SEMrush and a few other SEO tools to track industry trends and keep up on our peers’ Web activities.
  • What sets me apart from others in the Web content space is my journalism background. I studied journalism at Boston University before working as a journalist and then going into non-profit work. Working with breaking news and in disaster response are very high-stakes environments with pressing deadlines so I can handle just about any project thrown at me.
  • Prior to joining Project HOPE, I worked for the American Political Science Association where I helped manage the association's public site as well as several WordPress sites devoted to showcasing the association's programs and research. I also managed member databases, researched site analytics and generated data reports while providing excellent customer service to our members in English, French and Spanish. Although APSA is located in the United States, there is a very large Canadian membership.

    Previous positions included working at both the Georgetown University McDonough School of Business, in the District of Columbia, and iQ Solutions in Rockville, Maryland, developing email newsletters. Some of the healthcare clients I worked for include the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) and the National Institutes of Health (NIH). I have also produced and updated English and Spanish webpages for the National Institutes of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases (NIAMS).

    I am a proud alumnus of Boston University's College of Communication where I graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Broadcast Journalism and a minor in French Language and Literature.

    I often spend my free time dancing Lindy Hop, Blues and Brazilian Zouk and make several trips a year to Montréal for various dance events.

    What I Can Do

    I enjoy what I do. I am proud of what I do. And I cannot do just half, three-quarters or nine-tenths of something. If I am going to start a project, I finish it.

    1. Writing

    As a journalism major, I know how to write well for both print and online publications. I have used my writing abilities to report the news and also to promote businesses in the marketing space.

    2. Multimedia

    In my former days, I worked as a television reporter and video editor. I produced my own stories from start to finish and created my own special effects.

    3. Email Marketing

    By understanding that email design is not the same as Web design, I am proficient in writing email newsletters. I understand how to organise important information so that everything displays correctly.

    4. Web Content Management

    After having worked with many different Web content management systems such as WordPress, Drupal and DotNetNuke, I can say that I know how to organise and manage front-end appearances as well as the databases necessary to run the entire site.

    5. Web Strategy

    Digital strategy is the core of my responsibilities at Project HOPE. My goal is to conceptualise a strategy that brings together our communications, our fundraising efforts and our marketing initiatives to present a united front for our Web presence.

    6. Project Management

    Currently, I am leading a website migration with Project HOPE where I negotiate design and content creation with our contractor and work with our internal teams to create and migrate content.
